How to Talk to Your Doctor About G-d
|
| An Article from CNN The doctors, nurses, pharmacists and technicians gathered around her son's crib, their faces grim. Pamela Gorman knew what they were thinking: Her son, Christopher, was about to die. Christopher was just a few days old and had a rare blood infection and fungal meningitis, a brain infection. "I could tell in their eyes they had no hope for my son," Gorman said. "They told me to prepare for his death. They told me he might not make it through the night."
Gorman never believed the doctors. In fact, she did something she thinks annoyed these men and women of science: She prayed.

Interfaith Teens
|
| An Article from The Jewish Times How local Jewish organizations help interfaith teens connect to their Judaism.
Emily Schnell has been active in Temple Oheb Shalom's youth group since 9th grade. This year, the Dulaney High School junior is taking on leadership roles in the group, part of the Reform movement's NFTY (North American Federation of Temple Youth). She is events programmer and communications vice president.
"I joined for the social aspect," says Emily, 16, a tall, lanky girl with long, shiny hair whose family moved from Buffalo, N.Y., to Baltimore when she was 12. "But there is a religious element, too. On the High Holidays, the youth group runs the Friday evening service before the day of Rosh Hashanah."

It's Time to Focus on a New Generation
|
| An Article from Philanthropy.com The millennials are coming! The millennials are coming! In hallways, boardrooms, and conference calls across the nonprofit world, this warning cry is ringing out.
But too many in the nonprofit world forget that the millennials are already here. They are the people born from 1982 through the late 1990s dominating the world around us. They outnumber the baby boomers who are alive today.
Not preparing for and welcoming the millennials is more than a missed opportunity.

A Tearful Reunion for Nazi Survivors
|
| An Article from NY Post In the waning days of World War II, 15-year-old concentration-camp prisoner Hillel Himmel and hundreds of other terrified Jews lay at the bottom of a muddy makeshift grave, staring down the barrel of a Nazi machine gun. Rabbi Returning to Iraq
|
| An Article from The Jewish Times In his Sinai Hospital office, Rabbi Mitchell S. Ackerson keeps a grenade amid stacks of papers on his desk. Well, it's actually a fake grenade, with a numbered card dangling from its pin. "It was a gift, one of my staff," the rabbi said with a grin, pointing at a little sign at the grenade's base reading, "Complaint Department: Take A Number."
Of course, anyone who knows Rabbi Ackerson, 51, knows he's not the complaining type, even when it comes to traveling to combat zones and being away from his family to serve his country.

Hizbullah Spying Through 'Facebook'
|
| An Article from Arutz Sheva According to the intelligence community in Israel, Hizbullah terrorists are becoming increasingly computer savvy, using Facebook to learn more about IDF soldiers, potential targets for kidnappings.
Yeshiva World News reported that IDF intelligence officials are concerned that soldiers may unwittingly give the enemy information through social networking sites or even arrange to meet an internet companion who is in fact a terrorist. The IDF has undertaken an aggressive awareness campaign for soldiers, instructing them to be careful regarding what information they may reveal, cautioning and instructing them not to reveal the name of the branch of the service in which they serve, unit details et cetera. This is especially true of soldiers serving in the air force, intelligence, and elite combat units.

Wartime Pope's Reappraisal New Battleground In Culture War
|
| An Article from The Jewish Week Books, conferences are latest sign of effort to rehabilitate Pius XII. Left, right split over his legacy.
A politically aware teenager in Queens in the 1960s, Gary Krupp shared the prevailing opinion of Pope Pius XII, the controversial leader of the Roman Catholic Church during World War II. "I grew up hating him," Krupp says. Today, he is one of the pope's most vocal defenders in the Jewish community.
A seminary student in England in his 20s, John Cornwell is at 68 a prominent journalist and historian in his homeland, known for his criticism of Catholicism. His 1999 book, "Hitler's Pope: The Secret History of Pius XII," depicted Pius as sympathetic to Nazi Germany and indifferent to the persecution of European Jewry. Today, he says he may have overstated his original criticism of the pope.
